Cisco AnyConnect VPN Login Failed: Troubleshooting Steps

When attempting to download the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client on your Mac, you may encounter an error message stating that 'System software from developer Cisco was blocked from downloading.' This issue can be frustrating, but fortunately, it's easily resolved by following these simple steps.

To begin, click on the lock icon in the top-right corner of your screen. When prompted, enter your administrator username and password to unlock the preferences pane.

Next, navigate to the 'General' tab (refer to image 2 below). Here, you'll find the option to open the Security & Privacy settings. Click on this button to proceed.

If you miss this dialog box or encounter a security error, repeat steps 1 and 2 until the issue is resolved. When prompted, click the option to 'Open Security Preferences' (refer to image 1 below).

By following these steps, you should be able to temporarily override the system extension blocked by your Mac's security settings, allowing you to install Cisco VPN Anconnect.

Important Note for Mac Users

If you're unable to download the program or encounter a login failed error, there is an alternative solution. Macintosh users can access most of Yale Library's e-resources from off-campus without using VPN. For more information on this option, please refer to the video below.

Additionally, as of August 2020, affiliates of Yale University and Yale New Haven Hospital can access many e-resources remotely without VPN. This change simplifies the process for users who need to access library resources from outside the university network.
